I AM 57 YRS OLD AND HAD A JET SKI ACCIDENT RECENTLY. MY CT SCAN SHOWS: THE CEREBRUM HAS MILD DIFFUSE AGE RELATED ATROPHY WITH SYMMETRICAL ENLARGEMENT OF IT'S SURROUNDING CSF SPACE. THIS HAS PROGRESSED SINCE 12/12/2003. HOW IS THIS GOING TO AFFECT ME. I AM A NURSE AND VERY CONCERNED. DO I NEED TO SEE A NEUROLOGIST? MY HX IS DM, HYPERLIPIDEMIA, GERD, INTERSTIAL CYSTITIS,VIT D DEFF, GASTRIC SLEEVE 1 YR AGO WITH LOSS OF APPROX 50 POUNDS.
Findings suggests age related cerebral cortical atrophy. This is expected finding in every person with aging. With aging, there is loss of cerebral parenchyma which causes shrinkage of brain and it allows C.S.F spec to expand.
However, cerebral atrophy may be early seen in brain insult due to infection, hypoxia, trauma etc.
This condition generally doesn't require any treatment. You need to keep diabetes mellitus, altered lipid in controlled level.
